Matt & Roy's Grease Grotto

Matt Moreno came along and helped me evolve from the bucket filtering system into a more advanced, complicated, setup for filtering and fueling.  Actually, we have re-done the system many times.  Changing pumps, tanks, experimenting with many pipes & hoses, different containers and such.  It has been a hobby project under work.  We often get more WVO than we use.  Better too much than not enough.

Here you can see our setup as it is May 2007.   It will be changing yet again very soon.  We have one large 250 gal square container on the far left.  We use that to store extra WVO in.  Sometimes, if we get enough extra we trade WVO with a BioDiesel maker buddy.  We have a 5 gal metal can we use to pour out the WVO through a metal strainer to capture any big chunks.  Then the oil passes through an inline mesh screen of about 200 microns, through the pump and into the large square container, or into the water heater.  (The water heater is vented on top with lines that drain into the large WVO container.)

Once we have a Hot water tank full of WVO we run several heat & cooling cycles on it over the course of as many days as we can.  We shoot for at least a full week, but the longer we go the better settling action we get.  Before final filtering we drain off about 10% from the bottom of the hot water tank.  This gets out the water and any particulate matter and most of what we call "gravy".

For final filtering we pump from the water heater through the inline 200 then through another inline 100 micron mesh then through a metal housing that holds a 25 micron filter bag, then it is pumped into a double filter bag setting in the oval tank.  The double filter bag is a 5 micron bag inside a 2 micron filter bag setting in the mouth of the oval tank.  This is our final holding area for filtered ready to use WVO.  It is quite a bit more elaborate than is needed, but we are having fun and we are getting great filtered oil to use in our diesel grease rigs. Matt really loves valves, handles and switches.  He has more valves on this sucker than I can count!   We are planning to replace the metal filter bag holder with a taller blue plastic filter bag holder you can spot in the pictures.  Did I mention that we experiment allot, and that Matt digs levers and switches?   Matt just purchased a gadget to put our WVO in the hot water tank under Vacuum.  That is suppose to get rid of Moisture in our WVO.  Moisture is a bad thing, and the more we can remove moisture the better everything works.  Longer filter life on all the filters here and in the cars, and better running in the engines.  I'm sure Matt will have a few more valves to work into the system ;)

The nice little pump we have like the filters comes from McMaster Carr.  I'll plug in some details here soon.  But, it has been a great pump for the last 2 years.  From the big mushroom final filtered oil tank we can pump directly into our vehicles as you can see below.  The entire operation is taking up about 10X10 area in a 10X20 storage canopy.

Here are some pics of Matt and I filling both cars with filtered oil.  I'll get some better pics and udated info on our filtering/fueling system ASAP.
